As a young child I was the fortunate student of Gerald Brommer, a world-class elementary school teacher who later became a world-renown artist. During my first six grades at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in North Hollywood, California, I was taught geography, math, social studies, penmanship and other expected subjects by this kind and gentle man. But my favorite time was Friday afternoon art. We did murals of our social studies lessons, we drew people and put them in landscapes. We were encouraged to illustrate our thoughts when, like me, we couldn’t say them outright. Over time, we became noticers of light and shadow, of people and their expressions, and gained a sense of control over our emotions.
Through the years I often called on those experiences in running a business, raising my daughter and for a short time as a teacher. I became good at making seasonal crafts and cards and really thought that was the extent of my art abilities. Like everyone, I was happy in the creative process.
In the summer of 2000, I returned to my home city to be with my daughter, her husband and my new little grandson. This child offered up a profound love that freed my spirit and set me on a search for my passion. It was in a painting class that I was able to truly express my feelings. Finally, I had come alive. All I wanted to do was paint, draw, and learn every type of art - from printmaking to experimental painting. It was truly a grand time with grandson number two creating even more openings to my soul. What a relief to know that I was capable of this level of emotion and desire. That I could then translate those feelings into wonderfully whimsical and colorful collages that others loved too was more than I could have imagined.
At the end of 2009, I successfully exited the hardcore world of business and finance. I would like to thank the collapse of a variety of financial companies for shattering the stability of my world. Although this sounds a bit sarcastic, I truly could not be more grateful. This set of obtuse economic circumstances provided the opportunity for jumping full-on into who I really am – a creative and passionate artist.
My abstract collages are made using washi papers and acrylic ink, watercolor, found objects and a variety of designs and colors. Other creations are drawings of faces, paintings of eyes and cubist style prints; plus a host of framed paintings, now for sale. Like many new artists, it took me a while to be willing to part with my unique works of art and recognize that art is for sharing and bringing joy to others. My mother used to say that when I sang for people, it was an act of generosity that brought joy and peace to others. This is what I want for you – that you find joy and delight in the viewing.
The 'ArtLofts' in Beaufort SC is my studio home, gallery and classroom that I share with five other artists - who are fabulous human beings as well. Because I’m a technology fanatic and believe the internet and social media are the fastest ways to bring our work to the broadest international community of collectors, I keep looking for ways to spread the word about us. All that being said, collages with their textures and shadows and interesting shapes can come to life when you see them in person. Finding a 3-D way to showcase these is on my Curiosita list.
